Outsiders are restricted from buying land for Agricultural purposes in Uttarakhand

On Sunday evening, the decision was presided over at a high-level meeting chaired by Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand chief minister. According to the state administration, at this time, there is a restriction on buying land for agricultural purposes in Uttarakhand for outsiders. This decision has been made to safeguard the public interest per the directive of the Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami.

This decision will remain the same until further directives are issued or until the five-member drafting committee appointed by the Uttarakhand government examines the report in detail that the Committee on Land Law has submitted.

As per the official statement made by the state administration on Sunday, DMs (District Magistrates) would not permit outsiders to own the land for agricultural purposes.

As per the 2004 amendment to Section 154 of the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reform Act, 1950, individuals without real estate before September 12, 2023, can buy land for agricultural purposes.

It further stated that the government would act as per the sentiments of the people, as this would be for the betterment of the nation.

Before any land purchase, the background of the buyer will be checked, and the reason behind the purchase will be examined, said Pushkar Singh Dhami in the media on New Year’s Day. During the meeting, Dhami directed the land-law committee to take suggestions from the public.

On December 22, the government of Uttarakhand appointed a five-member drafting committee to review the report that the committee on land laws had submitted. On December 24, a massive rally was held in Dehradun under the aegis of “Mool Niwas Bhoo Kanoon Samvanya Sangharsh Samiti.”.

He further said this decision would ensure the locals have priority to get access to the state’s resources, which include jangal (forest), jal (water), and jameen (land), and would provide employment opportunities to the natives.

In the media interaction that was held on Monday, when asked about the agenda and challenges faced by the BJP government, Dhami responded, “There are some challenges, but with the blessings of God, people, and under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we will take the decision in favor of people and the nation”.
